Apprenticeship program gets SMART

A new apprentice training program has been established for WA workers beginning their careers in the mining and resources sector, with 12 apprentices about to be trained for work on the Gorgon project.
The You’re On Your Way training program was created by the Challenger Institute of Technology and CKJV, a joint venture between CB&I and Kentz, to provide support for the Gorgon gas fields, and will see 12 heavy fabrication apprentices take part in the 10-week course.
You’re On Your Way aims to benefit trainees and apprentices in areas such as  heavy fabrication, electrical, mechanical, scaffolding and rigging skills.
Challenger Institute general manager training services Jill Jamieson said the program looked to the future. “The fabrication and electrical trades are among the most sought after in Western Australia,” she said.
The program incorporates the Challenger Institute’s SMART model, launched in 2011 to tailor training to suit the needs of employers and students, to provide flexible learning.
In 2011, 28 fabrication apprentices were involved in SMART. This year the number of apprentices has risen by 60 per cent. Ms Jamieson said the learning model allowed students to learn more comprehensively.
“The model utilises existing skills, and industrial experience and knowledge, to enable apprentices to complete their apprenticeships based on competency rather than time served,” she said.
