Australian coup continues for global distributor

GLOBAL fuel distributor Puma Energy has become Australia’s largest independent fuel retailer following its $625 million acquisition of energy distribution group Ausfuel.
Puma acquired 100 per cent of the company from its majority owner (73.2 per cent) Archer Capital and other minority stakeholders.
As the owner of Gull, Choice and Peak service stations, Ausfuel owned 110 retail sites and 11 depots throughout WA, the Northern Territory, Queensland, South Australia and NSW; all of which will become part of Puma’s growing Australian portfolio.
In the weeks before its purchase of Ausfuel, Puma announced its first investment in Australia with the acquisition of Neumann Petroleum and its 120 service stations in Queensland and NSW.
Puma global chief executive Pierre Eladari said the timing was right for the company to move into the Australian market.
“The change in market dynamics, the closing of refineries and the growing volume of imports into Australia has opened up a great deal of opportunity for Puma Energy to invest into the Australian market,” he said.
Puma general manager for Australia Ray Taylor said the company had been planning its move into the Australian market for years, and decided that independent fuel businesses like Ausfuel and Neumann would make for the most successful partners.
“We have chosen a partnership with Ausfuel because it’s a strong business with the right culture and an excellent team to support it, and we believe Ausfuel will be a good strategic fit for Puma Energy,” Mr Taylor said.
“Puma Energy provides access to independent fuel supply and opportunities to help businesses like Ausfuel and Neumann grow their market share and expand into new regions and ultimately bring more competition to the Australian fuel market.”
A Singapore-based subsidiary of commodity trader Trafigura Beheer, Puma also has operations in Africa, the Middle East, Latin America, northeast Europe, the Caribbean and parts of Asia.
