Leading energy sector service company the Global Energy Group (GEG) is pleased to announce its fourth acquisition to further strengthen its portfolio in Western Australia.  Cunningham Construction joins the group, adding construction resourcing solutions &electrical & instrumentation (E&I) skillsets. Cunningham Construction are a prominent resource management provider throughout the Australasia mining sector, and Cunningham will generate entry into the mining market, a key growth market of GEG worldwide.

The acquisition strengthens the building of a strategic portfolio of specialist services for the Australia and Asia Pacific region.  Having established its regional headquarters in West Perth in September 2011, the group has acquired four successful Australian businesses, and complemented these with specialist services organically developed from the group’s international portfolio.  The Cunningham acquisition adds to a local portfolio that supports services including crew management, Quality Assurance & Inspection, NDT & Asset Integrity, Rope Access Construction and Fabrication to asset operators.  Cunningham Construction is the second acquisition this year following the investment in fabrication facilities in Kwinana, South of Perth.

Cunningham Construction Pty Ltd, founded in 2005, is the Australian branch of New Zealand’s leading Scaffolding and Rigging Company by the same name.  The group’s core business was in Rigging and Scaffolding, but has grown more rapidly supplying construction personnel to the mining sector in Australia.  Sales in Australia in 2012 exceeded $13 Million.   Sean Cunningham, MD of Cunningham Construction in Australia, will join GEG with further growth in mind.

Sean Cunningham commented on the acquisition, “We have enjoyed exponential growth since opening in Australia, particularly in the E&I space – which was different to our original aspirations.  Joining a group with GEG’s reputation and scale ($1 Billion Turnover) will enable us to strengthen our offering and realize further growth in the region enabling us to build upon our successes to date.”

Global Asia Pacific Regional Director, David Calder said, “Australia has become GEG’s second largest market next to the UK, with local revenues in excess of $100 Million.  Despite recent volatility in the mining and oil and gas sector, we are confident in further investing in this region.  We came to Australia with a remit to establish a very Australian business, whilst harnessing the value proposition that has made GEG so successful in other mature markets worldwide. We have reacted to customer wishes to bring specialist skills sets into this area, primarily designed to drive more efficient maintenance of critical assets and reduce risk in construction projects. By way of example, through our acquisition of Vertech we have pioneered the use of rope access techniques to perform difficult construction and maintenance tasks, reducing schedules and costs significantly for our customers.”

“The setup of our fabrication workshops now allow us to provide fast and cost–effective integrity repairs to assets, which is a model that is driving production performance on ageing facilities in Europe.  The recent dip in global activity has only fuelled our business, with customers now focusing on more cost effective solutions to running their facilities.  The most recent acquisition of Cunningham further enhances our presence in the market, and is particularly strategic by facilitating our entry into the mature mining sector.  The business also enhances our range of access skill-sets, as well as introducing E&I capability in Asia-Pacific, a core service offering of GEG worldwide.”

“With continued support from our customers in Australia, we hope to conclude at least one more acquisition between now and April.”
