Major upgrade and expansion for transformer facility

FOUNDED in 1933, Wilson Transformer Company (WTC) has recently completed a major upgrade and expansion of its power transformer factory in Glen Waverley, Victoria. The project began in 2009 with an investment of more than $65 million, and with goals to increase capacity and productivity, improve quality and safety, and adopt the latest technology to become a world-class power transformer manufacturer. Power transformers of up to 400 megavolt amperes (MVA) and 400 kilovolts (kV) can now be manufactured and tested in the new facility.
“The refurbished insulation and winding area is clean and segregated with positive pressure and climate control where new equipment, including winding machines, mandrels and insulation stabilisation, have been installed to increase quality control, safety and efficiency,” the company stated.
The core cutting and building area was relocated and now includes efficient material flow and is energy efficient through natural lighting and climate control. New equipment has also been installed.
The assembly and tanking bays have been refurbished with epoxy floors, winding dry out ovens, new assembly platforms, an additional vapour phase oven for internal dry out and air skates for transformer movements.
The new high voltage test laboratory is electrically isolated and shielded by a Faraday cage in a building where the ceiling and walls have been acoustically treated.
New equipment to improve testing capability includes loss measurement systems, impulse generators and high voltage test transformers.
The undercover oil storage and processing facility is in a new above-ground building with stainless steel piping to minimise the possibility of spills into the environment.
Mineral oil and natural esters can be stored and processed in the facility.
The new finishing building provides an additional area for transformer despatch, and has multiple air locks in place prior to entering the assembly and tanking area.
Since 2011, WTC has been registered with ISNetworld: an independent party that provides information about health, safety, procurement, quality and regulations to contractors and suppliers in capital-intensive industries.
